Saipan Fishermen’s Association will host its 37th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament on July 10 and 11.

The annual event will be free of charge and will be held at the Smiling Cove Marina starting at 6am on July 10 until 6pm on July 11.

According to SFA president Tony Scragg, SFA is looking at a full-blown fishing tournament compared to the scaled-down version done last year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“This year, depending on how we come out of this pandemic and with the blessing of the COVID-19 Task Force, we are looking to go back to our normal, full-blown international fishing tournament from July 10 to 11,” he said.

Scragg explained that last year, the tournament was held for one day, no trophies were awarded, and the banquet was canceled. However, this year, although there will still be COVID-19 protocols in place, SFA will have it for two days, as they did prior to COVID-19, and trophies will be awarded as well as a banquet.

“We [have] submitted a COVID plan to the task force on how we would address the registration ant the tournament itself. The fishermen, they want this event, so we try our hardest to put it on for them,” he said.

Aside from the scaled-down version of the International Fishing tourney during COVID-19 last year, SFA had its Mahi Mahi Derby delayed from March, it was pushed back to December. This year, the Mahi Mahi Derby was held last month.
