In a break with what has become longstanding practice, Shell Marianas took the lead yesterday with a price increase that saw its fuel prices go up by 10 cents, just five days since the last fuel price increase in the CNMI.
Shell Marianas’ V-Power gas price rose from $5.269 per gallon to $5.369 per gallon and its diesel price rose from $5.539 to $5.639.
The CNMI’s other fuel supplier, Mobil Oil Marianas, which usually raises its fuel prices first, is expected to follow suit today. The two companies typically mirror each other’s price adjustments.
As of yesterday afternoon, customers were seen fueling up at Mobil gas stations, with lines of up to three cars per pump. A gas attendant at the Mobil Sadog Tasi station said they’ve been busy most of the day and that his partner in the cashier’s booth has been swamped.
A 35-year-old motorist said he bought a full tank of gas yesterday and thinks prices will continue to increase in the next few months. He said it’s “not good for my wallet” and that he will try to cut back on driving—if that’s even possible.
The last fuel price increase was on July 20, with Mobil Oil Marianas breaking the over two-month streak of steady gas prices with a 15-cent increase.
