Fresh Market supports local farmers
Fresh Market located in Garapan opened in January this year as the outlet for slaughterhouse, Marianas Meat Harvesting Corp., but they are also dedicated to support local livestock producers and farmers to sustain the meat industry in all of the CNMI. According to manager Kevin Kim, their main products are local meat like fresh pork and beef.
“Our main product is local meat that includes fresh pork and beef. We are the only company licensed for slaughtering legally as we work with U.S. Department of Agriculture and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point team who are very strict regarding the processing of food and meat,” said Kim.
“We offer fresh meat which are USDA certified. Every slaughtering process is conducted by an inspector in a very clean environment and orderly manner. We guarantee the freshness of our products that are enjoyed by the local community,” he added.
Kim said that all their products are from Saipan. “Our livestock is grown and slaughtered by our company. Cows and pigs are also raised by us in our farm and again, an inspector form USDA is participates in all of our slaughtering as an observer so we can truly can say our product are top of the line and reliable for our customers.”
“The main focus of our food is ‘healthy’ as we pursue for the community to eat fresh and stay healthy. Our cows are grass-fed and this means it is good for our for diet and obtains more vitamin, especially for Omega 3,” he added
Kim adviced customers to make sure they get the freshest meat, and rely on their eyes and touch. “Visual identification of quality meat is based on color and firmness as meat should appear firm rather than very soft. Aside from pork and beef, Fresh Meat began this month to sell local fish like tuna and bottom fish such as kindai, pakapaka which is popular with the local community,” he said.
“We have been getting feedback from our customers that our products are affordable because they are reasonably priced. At the same time, we are delivering to customers/retail shop by ourselves. That is a big factor that is why we can reduce our cost and serve at reasonable prices…we also sell vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, cabbage, etc. from our local farmers,” he added.
