Police officers doing routine patrol on Monday tried to make a traffic violation stop on a vehicle that later turned out to have been stolen. The incident led to the arrest of four juveniles suspected of carjacking the vehicle.

The officers were conducting routine patrol along Chalan Pale Arnold Road in Chalan Laulau on Monday, Sept. 2, 2019, at approximately 3:12am, when they noticed a vehicle traveling north with one working tail light. The officers turned on their car’s blue lights and siren to do a violator stop. Instead of stopping, the vehicle swerved to the opposite side of the road near the Piggy House Restaurant and came to a complete stop. Four persons were seen hopping out of the vehicle and fleeing on foot toward McDonald’s.

Additional officers arrived to help look for the four suspects. After apprehending the first suspect, officers learned that the group had been walking in Garapan when they came upon an unlocked vehicle with the keys still in the ignition.

By 5:11am, all four suspects had been arrested and brought to the Commonwealth Health Center for clearance before being brought to the Department of Corrections juvenile detention center where they were booked and detained.

At about 9am that same day, the Department of Public Safety received a 911 call reporting a theft of vehicle in Garapan. After the caller described the vehicle, he or she was advised to visit the station. By 9:55am, the vehicle was returned to the rightful owner.

At about 7:43pm, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho set bail at $5,000 for each of the defendants. One juvenile was charged with stealing a vehicle; the other three were charged with stealing a vehicle and violating their pretrial release orders.

The police report did not indicate the ages of the four suspects, nor their previous cases. (PR/Saipan Tribune)
