LITERARY NOOK
Flores de Mayu
Flores Mayu in Sight
There are still bananas outside my eastern windows
most outside the kitchen window have been eaten now gone
new sprouts are growing where others got whacked down
sprouts seem to shoot up where some westerly wind blows.
Chunge’ birds wheel above and soar in pairs
in bridal white above the Australian pines
flying in tandem taking care of their own affairs
of their young offspring one rarely sees any signs.
Geckos climb house windows and walls inside and out
little gray and green scampering acrobats of derring-do
getting evening meals on the windows with nary a shout
there are a lot less little flying insects when they’re through.
May flowers in sight flame trees are starting to bloom
the ground will have a beautiful orange carpet very soon.
May Flowers and Mango Showers
Yes, indeed there seems to be plenty of May flowers
seems to be more blooms than in the month before
Yes, April is supposed to be the month for showers
and now showers of mangoes cover the jungle floor.
We’re up to our ears in hundreds of mango droppings
banana stalks and a variety of citrus trees do the same
the abundance of other island fruits is not stopping
for this fruit not to be gathered and eaten is a shame.
Flores mayu, flores rosa, yan bula puti tainobiu
blossom by the roadsides and on people’s lawns
flower with other names in botanical encyclopedias
make the island mas bunita yan bunitu at every dawn.
Look up in the sky watch out while walking you go
You might get hit on the head by a falling mango!
