CNMI Bar donates $5K for pre-law program

The CNMI Bar Association yesterday donated $5,000 to Attorney General Herbert Soll for the summer pre-law program. Acting CNMI Bar Association president Maya Kara, executive director Remy Sablan and Perry Inos, member of the committee, presented a check to Mr. Soll to cover the expenses for this summer’s program involving 18 students. This is the seventh time that the summer pre-law program is held on the island. The program will conclude today with a moot court competition, which starts at 1:00 p.m. in the Supreme Court.

PIBBA delegates note advancement in language standards

Panelists representing the five political entities of the Pacific Islands Bilingual Bicultural Association conference yesterday disclosed major advancements in the Indigenous Language Development Standards in their respective islands as a result of the PIBBA conference held in Kosrae last year. During an open discussion, the association grouped together island leaders who shared to other participants improvements on the development standards in their respective entities. This tradition has been set to measure the impact of the yearly meet which tackles concerns besetting bilingual and bicultural issues throughout the Pacific.

DPS, HPD make it to top 5

The CNMI Department of Public Safety and the Honolulu Police Department achieved a milestone at the 2003 DARE Training Conference by making it to the top 5 DARE Training Centers. It was learned that with the combined efforts of the State of Hawaii Training Center and the CNMI DARE Training Institute, the two law enforcement departments placed third among all DARE Training Centers in the nation. The criteria were based on professionalism, management, mentor performance, training outline, number of successful graduates, and trainings and activities beyond requirements to better the trainers.

NMIRF appeals for 2 more trustees

The NMI Retirement Fund has urged Gov. Juan N. Babauta to nominate two new Board of Trustees, to replace two members whose terms expired on June 6. Fund administrator Karl T. Reyes said that, with the terms of Marian Tudela and Thomas Saures having expired, the board seats that are required by law to be filled by a Carolinian and women representatives are now vacant. Reyes said that the Babauta administration has already been informed about this and asked it to nominate their replacement.

5 DPH clinics temporarily closed

The Department of Public Health has closed five peripheral clinics and facilities for lack of power and water following the onslaught of Typhoon Tingting Monday. DPH Secretary James U. Hofschneider said yesterday the clinics closed were: Afetnas/San Antonio Wellness Clinic, Children Development Assistance Centers in Garapan, HIV/STD Resource Center in Navy Hill, Community Guidance Center, and Medicaid Office on Capitol Hill. Hofschneider said these facilities will be opened as soon as the power and water supply are restored. All other clinics of the Commonwealth Health Center, he said, are open. These include the Family Care Clinic for Adults, Women’s and Children’s Clinic, Dental Clinic, Chest Clinic, and Walk-In Clinic. He said the satellite clinic in San Roque is also open. Meantime, DPH spokesman John Douglas said there have been no typhoon-related emergency cases reported.

Retroactive salary bill OK’d

The money is not in the bag yet but a bill that Gov. Juan N. Babauta recently signed brings past and present government employees much closer to getting the retroactive salary adjustments promised them under Public Law 7-31. In a letter to House Speaker Benigno R. Fitial and Senate President Joaquin Adriano, Babauta informed the Legislature that he has signed into law House Bill 14-169 that waives any statute of limitation defense against current and former employees who are entitled to the payment of the retroactive salary increase provided by law. Babauta said the measure also relieves the Department of Finance of liability for unpaid overtime compensation, in situations where documentation of overtime hours worked were not kept or maintained.
