The Commonwealth Council for Arts and Culture is getting ready for the upcoming Annual Flame Tree Arts Festival.
The event, scheduled for April 25 to 27 at the Civic Center Park in Susupe, marks the 33rd anniversary of the CNMI’s biggest annual festival.

The Flame Tree Arts Festival celebrates the rich art and cultural heritage of the Commonwealth and takes place usually in late April during the blossoming of flame tree flowers after which the event was named. The annual festival features a wide selection of artwork from CNMI, Guam, Rota, and visiting artists.

The event also showcases presentations by local and guest performing groups and musicians, art demonstrations, and an array of festival food favorites.

“This year’s festival marks its 33rd year celebration of one of the biggest cultural events here in the CNMI that promotes, perpetuates, and preserves the knowledge and skills of our gifted artist by providing programs such as this yearly [event] to demonstrate and display their beautiful arts and crafts for all to experience,” said festival coordinator Parker Y. Yobei.

According to the Yobei, a group from Southern California, a jazz group from Michigan (with one member on the island already), and two different groups from Guam will be joining the festival this year.

“There are still 20 slots available, but all 12 slots for food vendors are closed,” Yobei said.

Registration is still open to artists that want to take part this year. The fee schedule is as follows: Arts Council registered artists, $60; new or non-registered artists, $200; private commercial or food vendors, $1,000; non-profit organizations, $700; and information booths, $250.

“Artists are welcome to come in and register for the space. We will be open for another week for the chance to get a space before closing,” Yobei said.

The Arts Council would like to also thank major sponsors Delta Air Lines and IT&E who will be supporting the festival this year.

To register or for more information, visit the Arts Council office next to the post office on Capitol Hill or call 322-9982 or 83 to get applications via email.
