Five teams have confirmed their participation in the Race Around the River, Pacific Islands Club’s corporate human duck race challenge that is part of the 2012 Duck Race for Cancer slated for Feb 11.

PIC activities manager Glenn Policare said yesterday that Island Apparel, Coca-Cola/Foremost, The Law Offices of Robert Torres, Docomo Pacific, and Joeten Enterprises will be vying for a team-building night for 30 persons and two cases of drinks at PIC’s Laser Tag Park.

The Race Around the River is part of PIC’s Duck Race for Cancer, an annual fundraising event in support of the Commonwealth Cancer Association’s efforts to fight cancer in the CNMI.

This year’s event, which will feature the “PIC Duck Queen,” will have a twist.

“Participants will still don swim caps, life jackets and fins, but this year they will be swimming with a giant inflatable duck,” Policare told Saipan Tribune. “We tried to even out the field and make it so anyone could win!”

The event will be highlighted by the actual duck race, where plastic ducks will be released at PIC’s Lazy River in a race to the finish line.

The owners of the three fastest ducks will win $1,000 for first place, $300 in second, and $200 in third.

Ducks will be available at the Garapan Street Market on Feb. 2 and 9 for only $5 each. Policare disclosed that they always try to “sell as many ducks” as they can, with this year’s goal set at 2,012.

“We have come close to each year so I hope this is the year everyone helps out just a little. You don’t have to buy five or 10 ducks to win. Like I always say, it just takes one,” said Policare.

Policare, who lost his mother to cancer in 2001, urged the community to support the PIC event and CCA, which “has many programs in place to support cancer awareness and prevention.”

“I am proud to be spearheading this event and am calling on each and every person who reads this to chip in just a little. I know times are tough but they pale in comparison to those suffering from cancer. The cost of a duck is just $5. If we all bind together, there is nothing we cannot accomplish,” added Policare.
