Gov. Benigno R. Fitial re-nominated Viola Alepuyo yesterday to serve on the Public Utilities Commission, three days after the commission’s last meeting as no new commissioner had been appointed as of Friday. If the Senate and House confirm Alepuyo’s re-nomination, her term will expire on Jan. 8, 2016.

The governor also re-nominated yesterday newly-confirmed Commerce Secretary Sixto K. Igisomar and Adelina C. Roberto to serve on the NMI Retirement Fund board of trustees.

Igisomar, the Fund board’s current chair, represents Carolinians on the board, while Roberto represents women.

Fitial also nominated Norbert Hofschneider to serve as a member of the Commonwealth Election Commission to represent Tinian. If confirmed by the Senate, Hofschneider will serve a four-year term expiring on July 20, 2015.

The governor, in his one-page letter, requested the Senate and House’s favorable action on Alepuyo’s appointment. Alepuyo represents women/Carolinians on the commission.

Any nomination or re-nomination to the utilities commission requires the confirmation of both the House and Senate.

“Ms. Alepuyo is highly qualified to fulfill the vital responsibilities of this commission,” Fitial told Senate President Paul Manglona (Ind-Rota) and House Speaker Eli Cabrera (R-Saipan).

Alepuyo approved a total of 19 proposals during Friday’s meeting, which was effectively the commission’s last meeting as no new commissioner had been appointed at the time. Alepuyo, the sole remaining commissioner, will end her term in March but the governor submitted Alepuyo’s name to the Legislature for re-nomination much earlier than that.

The governor also submitted to the Senate on Jan. 25 copies of resumes, statements of financial interest, drug test receipt, and criminal records of Alvaro A. Santos and Gregoria R. Fitial-Omar, to support their re-appointment of Dec. 29.

Santos represents Saipan on the MPLT board. If confirmed by the Senate, he will serve another six-year term that will expire on Jan. 8, 2018.

Omar represents the Carolinian community and women’s sector on the MPLT board. Like Santos, Omar’s term if confirmed will be renewed for another six years or until Jan. 8, 2018.
