Gov. Benigno R. Fitial said he received yesterday morning a summary of Attorney General Ed Buckingham’s first update on its investigation into complaints filed against Department of Public Safety Commissioner Ray Mafnas, who has been placed on administrative leave since March 26.
Fitial, however, said he “cannot reveal anything yet” because it’s only the first update, and the investigation and reports are not completed yet.
“I still need to review the summary and then wait for the details to discuss,” Fitial said in an interview at the ribbon-cutting of RE/MAX Paradise Realty in Dandan yesterday morning.
Once the investigation and report are complete, the administration will disclose the findings, he said.
“Of course. I can do it myself or ask the attorney general to talk to you,” he added.
The Office of the Attorney General’s three main areas of investigation are the complaints filed against Mafnas by two security guards and a dive instructor; the allegations contained in a petition signed by DPS employees against Mafnas; and a letter from a police captain alleging that Mafnas interfered with a murder investigation.
Fitial said the summary he received from the AG is “only like three pages.”
He also said this summary report is only between him and the AG. This will not be communicated to Mafnas.
“This is only the first summary update,” he added.
The Fitial administration has vowed to thoroughly and fairly investigate each complaint filed against Mafnas.
