Fitial back on Saipan

Share

Former governor Benigno R. Fitial arrived on Saipan at around 8:05 Saturday morning from the Philippines via Guam, sources said.
Fitial’s arrival is four days before his April 30 voluntary appearance in Superior Court in connection with criminal charges for allegedly shielding former attorney general Edward T. Buckingham from being served with penal summons in 2012.

Buckingham was already convicted in February this year.

Fitial is the only governor that the CNMI House of Representatives impeached on charges of corruption, felony, and neglect of duty. He resigned on Feb. 20, 2013, days before the start of his trial at the Senate to determine whether he should be removed or not.

A day after his resignation, Fitial has not returned to the CNMI until April 26, 2014.
