Fitial back from 3-week trip but will be off to Guam soon

Gov. Benigno R. Fitial is back from an almost three-week trip to Washington, D.C. and California to attend several meetings, but is expected to leave again for Guam to attend the Micronesian Chief Executives Summit next week.

Fitial left on Feb. 14 and came back March 5. The MCE summit in Guam will be from March 12 to 14.

Lt. Gov. Eloy S. Inos, in a brief interview, said Fitial came back yesterday morning. He said he has yet to meet with the governor on issues such as the planned exemption of federally funded programs from the 16-hour work cut biweekly.

Rep. Ray Basa (Cov-Basa) separately confirmed the governor is back and looks forward to today’s meeting on the Commonwealth Healthcare Corp.’s controversial loan bill.

Fitial’s first destination when he left Saipan on Valentine’s Day was Los Angeles, Calif., where he joined U.S. Vice President Joe Biden, Chinese Vice President Xi JinPing, California Gov. Edmund G. Brown and others in a Feb. 17 roundtable discussion on bilateral economic, cultural, and educational ties between the United States and China.

He then proceeded to Washington, D.C. for several meetings. The first one was the U.S. Coral Reef Task Force’s 27th meeting on Feb. 23 He then attended the National Governors Association Winter Meeting from Feb. 25 to Feb. 27. He was also at the Western Governors Association meeting. Attorney General Ed Buckingham joined the governor at the NGA meeting.

The governor also attended the 2012 Interagency Group on Insular Areas meeting on Feb. 28 and 29. After the NGA meeting, Fitial was set to attend the Federal Regional Council in San Francisco, California.
