Fishing derby set for July 25

The 36th Annual Saipan International Fishing Tournament will be held on July 25.

Registration is on-going at the Marianas Visitors Authority’s office in San Jose. Last day to sign up is on July 24 at the Smiling Cove Marina from 4pm to 6pm.

Participating teams will battle for the Grand Prize (heaviest marlin) and Total Weight categories and the Top 3 in marlin, yellow fin, wahoo, mahi, and skipjack.

Last year, Aquaholics of skipper Tony R. Flores hauled a 462-lb marlin to take the Grand Prize, while Jeff Espinosa’s Jernie II won in the Total Weight category after its catch tipped the scale at 304lbs.

In the marlin category, Melvin Aldan’s Heller won first place (438 lbs), while Mike James’ Emmanuel and Wayne Martin’s Nombei finished second and third after reeling in 238-lb and 204-lb marlin, respectively.

In the yellow fin category, the Top 3 winners were CM 4735 (47.8 lbs), Victoria Lei (46.2 lbs), and Magnificent (46 lbs). St. Christopher (30.7 lbs) ruled the wahoo category and was joined in the podium by CHada Gueru (29.8 lbs) and Santa Soledad (29.8).

Bella’s 24.8-lb catch topped the mahi category, while Bottoms Up (10.1 lbs) and Lady in Red (8.3 lbs) came in second and third, respectively. In the skipjack division, Ocean Masta earned first place with its 14.9 lbs, closely beating Bunita (14.6 lbs) and Olympic (14 lbs).
