The CNMI Department of Public Safety’s Fire Division received an emergency call for a generator fire at the T Galleria in Garapan at 4:08pm yesterday. The caller indicated that the fire was located on the northern part of the second floor in the generator room.

DPS Police and Fire personnel were dispatched to the area. The first arriving medic responding from the Garapan Fire Station arrived on scene at 4:11pm. Fire Engine 1, assigned to the San Roque Fire Station, arrived shortly at 4:19pm.

Information gathered indicated that a mechanic for the T Galleria assigned to the generator room was inspecting the area in preparation to secure from work when he noticed “smoke coming from one of the generator rooms.” He opened the door and immediately noticed a small fire. He attempted to suppress the fire with several extinguishers but was unable to do so. T Galleria employees contacted the Department of Public Safety Fire Division for assistance.

Upon arrival, Fire personnel were able to contain the fire with additional fire extinguishers. The fire was subsequently fully suppressed at 14:39pm.

One victim was treated on scene by medics for a breathing related issue but refused to be brought to the Commonwealth Health Center.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation and is suspected to be electrical in nature. (DPS)
