Fire hits kitchen of Coffee Care

A fire broke out in the kitchen of the Coffee Care restaurant in Sadog Tasi yesterday morning.

A cook and firefighters prevented the blaze from spreading to other parts of the building. No one was reported hurt in the blaze that lasted minutes.

When the fire occurred at about 10:10am only a cook and a waitress were inside the restaurant.

The cook told Saipan Tribune that he was in the kitchen when he suddenly saw thick smoke in the exhaust vent. He said he immediately turned off the exhaust and tried to extinguish the fire.

The cook said he had no idea where the smoke was coming from as he was not even cooking at the time. He ran outside as the smoke became thicker.

The waitress was surprised to see the thick smoke in the kitchen and ran outside, leaving her bag inside.

A staff of Vestcor that owns the building called 911.

A Vestcor maintenance worker said that when he arrived he saw smoke coming out of Coffee Care. He opened the door of the defunct brewery house of Micronesian Brokers adjacent to the restaurant so firefighters could get inside the building.

The maintenance worker said the fire burned a portion of the wooden wall of the former brewery house because the exhaust vent passes through that wall.

He said firefighters immediately responded but it took them awhile to start spraying water.

There was no immediate information on the extent of the damage to the restaurant.

When Saipan Tribune left the scene at 11:45am, investigators were still gathering more information.

A certain Mr. Wang reportedly owns Coffee Care.
