For the third consecutive time, the Department of Public Safety’s Fire Division reigned supreme yesterday at the Guns & Hoses Legendary Burger eating contest in celebration of Hard Rock Café’s 41st founding anniversary.

Five firefighters got stuffed as they wolfed down Hard Rock Café Saipan’s spicy signature Chamorro Burgers without sauce and sidings, defending their title against a team of five police officers who put up a good fight in an event witnessed and cheered on by other DPS staff and officials led by acting commissioner Ambrosio Ogumoro.

The winning team was composed of firefighter 1 Joaquin Camacho, firefighter 2 Allan Farley, firefighter 3 Francis Manglona, firefighter 1 Carlos Sablan, and firefighter 2 Paul Sasamoto. They received certificates and a Hard Rock shirt as prizes.

This year’s event featured a burger eating relay contest, wherein one team member had to consume one burger before the next member can take their turn to eat their share of a plateful of Chamorro burgers.

Camacho, who was the first in line, said he felt the pressure to eat faster. “It was my first time to join and it was fun.”

Sablan, who devoured two burgers, said he would “definitely join again any time. Free meals, why not?”

Sasamoto said the trick to their victory was “to drink water to make it easier to swallow.”

The challengers from the Police Division team were Israel Deleon, Josef Guerrero, Rodolfo Hermesila, Dave Rabauliman, and Rudy Sablan.

Hard Rock Saipan restaurant manager Mikka T. Valencia said they decided on the relay concept to make the contest more fun and exciting. In the past, policemen and firefighters competed in pairs. “As we celebrate the 41st anniversary of Hard Rock, we’re glad that we’re able to give honor to our men in badges,” Valencia told Saipan Tribune.

The anniversary celebration culminated with the cutting of the ceremonial cake last night.
