The Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services is seeking the community’s help in getting information on the fire that had engulfed a van behind Club 88 last Monday.

According to DFEMS spokesperson Robert Mojica, a male caller contacted 911 last Monday, May 23, at about 12:22pm to report a vehicle fire in Garapan behind Club 88. Engine – 2 responded to the location and arrived at the scene at around 12:26pm. They found a white van on fire in the parking garage behind Club 88.

DFEMS investigators Tony Santos stated that the cause of the fire has yet to be determined and so it remains under investigation. DFEMS’ Joseph Lifoifoi has also been assigned to the scene.
The Division of Prevention and Arson Investigation is requesting the public’s assistance if they have any information about the vehicle fire to call (670) 664-9178.

According to Santos, when he arrived on the scene, he observed a white van bearing the license plate AV 060 parked on the southern side of Saipan Ocean View Hotel Parking Garage.

The investigator said a bed mattress was found on top of the vehicle’s hood. Further investigation revealed that the fire was first seen on the mattress. The vehicle sustained severe heat and smoke damage in the engine compartment and interior, Santos said, but did not spread to anywhere else. The structure above the parking garage did sustain moderate damage due to severe heat and smoke.
