A fire engulfed a workers’ barracks located behind the former UIC garment factory in San Antonio yesterday.
Department of Fire and Emergency Medical Services spokesperson Bobbie Taisacan said that there were no reports of injuries and the fire was controlled at around 5:10pm yesterday.
She said the barracks was home to at least 10 workers and the fire remains under investigation.
Taisacan said the fire completely destroyed the barracks, including all the belongings of the people who live there.
According to individuals at the scene, the fire was seen and reported before 4pm and they were not sure what or who started the fire.
At the scene, Saipan Tribune saw that a vehicle had also caught fire.
Fortunately, the people living in the area were able to evacuate before the flames got worse.
Taisacan said the cause of the fire is still under investigation and further information will follow.
The semi-concrete barracks is located right behind the former UIC garment factory and the old Sablan Construction Warehouse that was also completely destroyed in a fire last year.
According to a previous Saipan Tribune article, the old Sablan Construction Warehouse was one of three structures that were engulfed in flames and left completely destroyed in June 2018.
The fire spread to an adjacent warehouse, an abandoned United International Corp. building that also sustained total damage.
When firefighters arrived at the scene, the abandoned Sablan warehouse was already engulfed in flames.
The blaze was reportedly traveling south toward the UIC warehouse but firefighters suppressed the blaze and prevented it from moving toward other warehouses in the UIC compound.
The homes of at least four people were destroyed in that fire.
