The championship matches of the boys 13, women’s, and boys 18 divisions of the 2022 Marianas Village Pride Basketball League were finally settled following the semifinals over the weekend at the Gillette Multi-Purpose Center.
In the boys 13, top seeds Kagman and Tanapag beat their respective opponents to advance to the championship.
No. 1 seed Kagman got an unexpected challenge from No. 4 seed Oleai before prevailing, 48-44, last Sunday. Liam Wilson paced the winners with 19 points, while the 12 points of Raffy Cai led Oleai.
Second seed Kagman, meanwhile, disposed of Finasisu, 51-44, last Friday thanks to the 17 points of Dale Garcia who led the team. The game-high 22 points of Jairus Pangelinan almost brought Finasisu to the Promised Land.
In the women’s division, second seed Garapan was the first to advance to the championship round following its 43-40 nipping of third seed San Vicente last Friday.
Marlene Lumabi led Garapan with 15 points, while Madeleine Alegre ably backed her up with 12 of her own. Destiny Pangelinan’s 20 points was wasted in San Vicente’s semifinal
loss.
Top seed Dandan justified its lofty standing after eeking out a 36-32 win over fourth seed Kagman last Saturday.
Antonette Labausa did most of the heavy lifting for Dandan after finishing with 12 points, while the 13 markers of Kaia Travilla paced Kagman.
In the boys 18, a rematch of the final regular season game between top seed Koblerville and second seed Gualo Rai is set after the two rivals beat their semifinal opponents in contrasting fashions.
Gualo Rai was the first to book a finals ticket after it withstood the challenge of No. 3 Kagman, 67-62, last Friday.
Craig Padayao was brilliant all game long as he led Gualo Rai with 21 points. Leo Naraja was no chopped liver either as he contributed 20 points. Gino Rasg and Frankie Satur paced Kagman in their gallant stand with 19 points and 17 points, respectively.
Unlike their finals opponent, Koblerville coasted to a 53-38 victory over No. 4 Dandan last Saturday. Airson Atan led a balanced attack by Koblerville with 12 points, while Kenny Lacquian fired 16 in the loss.
The three championship matches were originally set for this Saturday, but the leaking roof at the TSL Sports Complex venue postponed the finals to the following weekend.
