Fed court closed ’til Wednesday; local courts resort to partial day operations
U.S. District Court for the NMI Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona has directed the federal court to remain closed until Wednesday, Aug. 12, because of the conditions on Saipan in the aftermath of Typhoon Soudelor.
In a general order last week, Manglona said the court would be open this Wednesday from 8:30am to 11:30am, at which time she will issue a further order.
The judge put on hold all civil matters scheduled for the weeks of Aug. 3 and Aug. 10 until further notice.
The matters moved to Wednesday at 9am are the revocation of supervised release of Francisco Basa, the pretrial conference and motion hearing in the case against Alexandra Macabalo, the status conference in the case against Daniel Quitugua, and the pretrial conference in the case against Randy Sablan.
All filing deadlines in pending cases are suspended until further notice.
“If a matter needs to be addressed urgently, please contact usdcnmi@nmid.uscourts.gov,” Manglona said.
For local courts, acting Chief Justice John A. Manglona and acting Presiding Judge Joseph N. Camacho ordered that for Saipan, business hours will be limited to 8am to 12pm from Monday through Friday, Aug. 14.
In a notice, Manglona and Camacho said this schedule will be maintained until further notice.
They said changes to this schedule will be disseminated on the Judiciary’s website, www.justice.gov.mp, and through the media.
“The partial day operations on Saipan are expected to continue until issues associated with water and fuel availability and standby power generation are resolved,” Manglona and Camacho said.
On Tinian and Rota, the court’s hours of operation will be from 7:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.
Meanwhile, Saipan Tribune learned that the CNMI Bar Association office located in the Judicial Complex in Susupe sustained water damage from the typhoon.
