Favored players triumph in girls singles

Top-ranked Conatsu Kaga and Isabel Heras lived up to high expectations after ruling their respective divisions in the 8th Annual Tan Holdings Tennis Classic last Sunday at the Fiesta Resort & Spa Saipan tennis courts.
Conatsu had no love lost to her youngest sister Coume as the former swept their title match in the girls U14 singles, 6-4, 6-1. Conatsu took the finals berth at the top half of the draw after eliminating Riko Ojima, 6-0, 6-1. Ojima advanced to the semis following a walkover victory against Hyunmin Cho. Coume, on the other hand, defeated Maria Gregoire, 6-3, 6-1, to arrange a title duel with her older sister in the girls U14 singles.
In the girls U18 singles, former U16 champion Isabel Heras was unbeaten in the round-robin competition to bag the division crown. She first downed last year’s U14 winner Malika Miyawaki last Saturday, 6-1, 6-2, and then outclassed Tania Tan in the deciding game last Sunday, 6-4, 7-6 (9) to top the division. Tan, who bowed to Heras in the U16 finale last season, finished second in the girls U18 singles as she earlier edged Miyawaki in their Friday showdown, 6-4, 6-4.
Meanwhile, the girls U10 and U12 singles divisions also a round-robin format with Anika Camacho Helen Kim emerging as champions.
Kim went perfect in three games to clinch the girls U10 singles title. She started her string of wins last Friday when she shut down Hoo Wang, 6-0, while her second win in similar scores came last Saturday against Seo Hee Lee. In her third match, Helen Kim was paired against Chae Eun Kim and though the latter gave the former a good fight in last Sunday’s tiff, Helen still prevailed, 6-2.
Lee finished second with her 2-1 record, as she won over Chae Eun Kim, 7-6, and Hoo Wang, 7-5. Chae Eun rounded out the Top 3 with her lone win recorded against Wang, 8-3.
In the girls U12, Camacho had already secured the division crown as early as last Saturday following her 7-5, 6-3 victory over J.C. Ferrer. Camacho finished the round-robin play with a 2-0 record as she also swept Helen Kim last Friday, 6-3, 6-4. Ferrer defeated Kim, too last Sunday, 6-0, 6-3, to take the runner-up honors.
