Both pairs played their first matches with Lazaro and Zapanta sweeping their two games by default, including an eliminations game against Farro and Malasarte. Farro and Malasarte also had an easy win over Patricia Abantao and Jerralyn Castillo, who again failed to show up for the match, to earn the right to face Lazaro and Zapanta in the finals.
In the title match, Farro and Malasarte breezed through a 21-10, 21-4 win to forge a winner-take-tall Game 2 and went on to complete the victory with a masterful 21-7, 21-10 decision.
The young pair, in both matches, capitalized on their opponents’ numerous errors to enjoy double-digit margins. Farro and Malasarte alternated in scoring the points with an array of smashes and dropped shots to complete the sweep.
Meanwhile, Malasarte is also in contention for the mixed doubles C crown after pairing with brother Jerome in pulling off an 18-21, 21-18, 21-16 triumph over Baby Banadera and Patrick Fernandez.
In other results, youngsters Deether Ortega and Jong Min are so far undefeated in the men’s doubles A after wins over the pairs of Cris Hilario and Ferdie Arago and Aries Cordero and Jerry Hibi.
Ortega and Min first dispatched Hilario and Arago, 21-10, 21-17, and then had to grind out a 21-17, 18-2, 21-17 decision over the Cordero-Hibi tandem.
Hilario and Cordero bounced back with a 21-18, 21-13 win over Fernandez and Leo Sun, while Arago was not that lucky after his partnership with Windy Fernandez resulted to a 21-6, 21-17 loss to the brother-sister tandem of Jordan and Janelle Pangilinan in the mixed doubles A division.
Glen Bluutjens and Young Sun also won their match in the men’s A doubles, posting a 21-16, 21-17 decision over Jordan Pangilinan and Joel Ortega.
Ortega’s luck changed in the men’s doubles B after teaming up with Edwin Montoya in completing a 21-16, 21-19 victory over Edwin Maratas and Jorge Olanda.
In the women’ doubles B, Loyda Ito’s partnership with Ana Alvarez resulted to a 17-21, 21-19, 21-19 triumph against the tandem of Malou Malasarte and Marlene Peraja in the doubles B category. Ito went on to gain two wins last weekend, as she teamed up with Tae Ho in pulling off an 18-21, 21-18, 21-13 win over Roger Vales and Annette Ta in the mixed doubles 40-and-above division.
Vales and Ta rebounded with a 21-14, 21-14 win over Bluutjens and Emily Vargas, while Jeff Riman and Cheng Zingapan tripped Abanto and Zeke Macario in the mixed doubles B.
Elimination round matches in the Tan Holdings Open continued last night, while title games in several other divisions are expected to finish this Friday. (Jon Perez)
