Robert “Bob” J. Barry, who was instrumental in the establishment of the Rotary Club of Saipan, gestures as Rotary president Pete Igitol looks on during yesterday's meeting at Hyatt Regency Saipan's Giovanni's Restaurant. Barry and Jim Alger of the Rotary Club of Guam recommended extending the Rotary Club to Saipan based on a feasibility submitted in 1966, giving way to the organization, which marked its 44th anniversary this year. (Clarissa V. David)  Rotary Club of Saipan president Pete Igitol is encouraging club members to provide any kind of help to a former Rotarian and long-time public servant in need.

Igitol, during yesterday’s meeting, read a letter from Viol Diaz, daughter-in-law of former mayor Francisco M. Diaz, requesting for assistance to help defray the cost of sending their father to Honolulu, Hawaii for medical treatment.

“Due to lack of funding in our CNMI government, Medical Referral will only be able to provide room accommodation. Airfare and meal expenses [are] at the cost of the patient,” said Viol Diaz.

To raise the needed amount, Diaz said they will be holding a dinner fundraiser at the Pacific Islands Club Charley’s Cabaret on June 1, Friday, from 6pm to 9pm. Tickets to the fundraiser cost $50 each.

“We kindly ask for support in purchasing tickets for this event,” said Viol Diaz, who is in charge of the fundraiser. “Any support and contribution is most greatly appreciated.”
