Family group to lead autism awareness drive
In celebration of April being Autism Awareness Month, the Autism Family Support Group, which is a parent-led group, is happy to announce that they will be coordinating events for the month of April to raise awareness of those impacted by autism and to support children under the spectrum.
Autism Spectrum Disorder, or ASD, is a complex developmental disability that affects an individual’s social skills, communication, and behavioral challenges. The autism experience is different for everyone. Raising awareness can help our community become aware and have a better understanding of those under the spectrum.
April 2 is Autism Awareness Day and the group will host a “Walk for Autism” at the Oleai beach pathway across Modern Stationary at 4:30pm. Every Wednesday for the month of April is “Wear Blue Wednesday.” On April 24, the group will have a Fun in the Park Day at the Sugar King Park at 4pm and children under the spectrum will get a free treat while supplies lasts. On April 30, we will close out the celebration with “Art for Autism” that allows individuals to share their art pertaining to autism.
The Autism Family Support Group consists of parents and families that continue to be the No. 1 advocates for their children with autism. The group provides peer support for one another that allows parents to share experiences, obstacles and strategies. Many parents have expressed that they are happy to connect with families that go through similar experiences. Our group collaborates its efforts and dedication with the Family 2 Family Health Information Center. (PR)
