The Federal Aviation Administration, through FAA Airports District Office manager Gordon Wong, issued last July 12, 2023, its preliminary notice of award of supplemental funds to the Commonwealth Ports Authority in the amount of $7,563,600. The funds are sourced from the FY 2022 Supplemental Discretionary Funds Program, which make additional funds available for airport construction projects.

“We are very pleased with the FAA notice, which is a discretionary award that CPA had to make the case for as to our needs and priorities. We will put together our application package for the airport improvement projects,” said CPA executive director Christopher S. Tenorio.

CPA board chair Kimberlyn King-Hinds said, “The CPA team is commended by the board as everyone, from custodial staff on up and on all three islands have worked so hard to improve our overall performance. These funds will help to improve our airport facilities. We are far from done, but we are rebuilding and looking to build and do better.”

Ongoing projects now include the commuter terminal reconstruction and the commuter terminal road repaving. CPA is undertaking repairs and preventative maintenance work to its loading bridges and support facilities. On Tinian, CPA is completing the renovated and expanded ARFF facility and expanding the parking lot. On Rota, CPA is planning the parking lot expansion and pursuing funding for the airport terminal roof replacement. (PR)
