An extraordinary evening of music and food

Those who were fortunate enough to receive an invitation from J.C. Clark to his As Lito home on Dec. 19 were treated to an extraordinary evening of music and food.

Fitted with a baby grand in their living room, J.C. Clark introduced his guests to his talented son, Nathaniel, and his classically trained pianist wife, HyeYeon Hwang. Hwang also accompanied Hoo Wang and MiHye Park’s tear-inducing performance of Do You Want to Build a Snowman. Park treated her guests to a musical performance of Schubert Die Forrelle and The First Noel. The pieces chosen by Hwang’s own solos were familiar Chopin pieces, even to those who may not be classical music enthusiasts. Her execution, however, was stunning in its energy and emotion.

Hwang’s three solos were followed by two spunky jazz pieces from her niece, Hyun-ji, who flew in from Korea the day before. The high schooler’s bravado was enough to bring the crowd to their feet.

Then the host, J.C., completely enthralled the audience with his jazz song and piano. Spiked with his own brand of humor and artistry, J.C. played to the audience who went wherever he wanted to lead them.

Then there was the food. Korean, Russian, Irish, and American dishes—all labeled as a Gourmet Potluck Concert Party—were shared by all.

Park MiHye hails from Korea where she was a professional musical actress and singer. Hwang HyeYeon, also from Korea, is an award-winning classical pianist whose dedication to her art inspires. J.C. Clark has over 20 years of experience performing professionally both in the United States and Korea.

Although the night was a family affair with friends, a formal presentation of the performers including J.C.’s jazz band will be heard and seen on Feb. 25, 2016, at Hyatt’s Sand Castle. The proceeds will go to Whispering Palms School where all the performers’ children attend.

We are all very blessed to house such a pool of gifted musicians on the island.
