Tinian Mayor Joey P. San Nicolas on Wednesday, appointed former Tinian Mayor Ray Dela Cruz to serve on the Commonwealth Casino Commission representing Tinian.

In his appointment letter, San Nicolas said that Dela Cruz’s “knowledge, skills and experience from having served on the Tinian Casino Gaming Control Commission will be a valuable asset to the [Commonwealth Casino Commission]. With the complex federal and local issues that face the CNMI’s casino industry, experience in the casino regulatory field is crucial to ensuring that we maintain a reputable industry.”

Dela Cruz served one term as mayor of Tinian prior to San Nicolas’ administration and also served several terms as a senator representing the island of Tinian. “As a former mayor and senator representing the second senatorial district, I know that Mr. Dela Cruz can also appreciate the employment opportunities for our citizens and contributions to the overall health of the economy that a healthy casino industry provides for the CNMI. With these additional personal experiences, I am confident that Dela Cruz will recognize the importance and value of balancing the need to maintain the integrity of the industry through proper regulation and the need to ensure the long-term viability of the industry,” said San Nicolas.

Dela Cruz’s appointment requires the advice and consent of the Tinian Legislative Delegation. (PR)
