Former Saipan mayor Jesus “Gere” Sablan Deleon Guerrero passed away on Friday morning, Valentine’s Day, due to pancreatic cancer. He was 82.

Deleon Guerrero’s only wish was to return to the home he loved and he died as the helicopter was on its final descent onto Saipan from Guam, according to a family member.

Deleon Guerrero served as Saipan mayor from 1990 to 1998.

The family member said that Deleon Guerrero was diagnosed with cancer only last New Year’s Eve.

Attorney Viola Alepuyo told Saipan Tribune that she grew up in Deleon Guerrero and his wife’s home and in the United States. Deleon Guerrero’s wife is Alepuyo’s mother’s sister.

Alepuyo said Deleon Guerrero was a mentor to her husband, Superior Court Associate Judge Joseph N. Camacho.

“He was a great, wise man who we consulted on all that we did,” Alepuyo said.

Deleon Guerrero is survived by his wife, Victoria Alepuyo Deleon Guerrero. They have 10 children: Joseph Alepuyo Deleon Guerrero (deceased), Antonio Camacho (deceased), Juan Camacho, Juan A. Deleon Guerrero, Mariann V. Fernandez, Perdita DLG. Roberto, Anna R. Villagomez, Jesse A. Deleon Guerrero, Rose Marie A. Deleon Guerrero, and Ammalyn Victoria A. Deleon Guerrero.
