Lorraine T. Cabrera, the former interim president of Northern Marianas College, was named the newest honorary member of the Board of Regents after being selected by the Staff Senate Council in an election last week.
Cabrera, director of the college’s Adult Basic Education program, was the sole nominee for the position. She attended her first meeting with the board on Wednesday.
The new Staff Senate president replaces Daisy Revilla, who stepped down early this year. The eight- member Staff Senate Council also selected Ross Manglona to be the organization’s new vice president.
Saipan Tribune learned that Cabrera was actually the very first Staff Senate president at the college and held the position for two terms in the early 2000. This marks her third time to be an honorary member of the college board.
Cabrera became NMC’s interim president in January 2010 when then president Dr. Carmen Fernandez was suspended and later terminated by the board. She occupied the position for more than a year until she was replaced by Dr. Sharon Hart in July this year.
As Staff Senate president, Cabrera said that standing issues about salary and employment contracts are among the major concerns she will champion with the management and the board.
Salary increases at the college has been stalled for many years. The last time they got a pay raise was in 1994.
Cabrera said the employment contract matter is now being communicated with NMC president Hart and they hope to see some movement on the issue in coming months.
