Ex JROTC instructor pleads guilty to assaulting cadet
Ex-Marianas High School Junior Reserves Officers’ Training Corps instructor Ernest Ronald Torres has pleaded guilty to assaulting a former student.
During a change of plea hearing last Tuesday, Torres pleaded guilty to one of two charges filed against him following an alleged sexual assault incident back in 2015.
Torres was charged with sexual assault in the second degree and assault and battery. Torres pleaded guilty to assault and battery.
The charge of sexual assault in the second degree was dismissed with prejudice.
The Superior Court sentenced Torres to a total of 59 days imprisonment.
As part of his plea agreement, Torres will also be placed on probation for three years, to have no contact with the victim and to stay at least 1,000 feet away from her, write a letter of apology to the victim, and pay all court costs and fees.
Torres must also pay a $1,000 fine and perform 200 hours of community service.
According to court information, Torres drove the victim, his former cadet, around Saipan in his personal vehicle on May 12, 2015. While on the drive, Torres allegedly touched the victim several times without her consent.
At the time of the incident, the victim was 18 years old.
