A federal grand jury has indicted an ex-convict who reportedly assaulted a relative and fired a handgun in As Teo last year.
The indictment charged Justin A. Funkugub with felon in possession of a firearm; possession of a firearm with a removed, altered, or obliterated serial number; and felon in possession of ammunition.
According to the indictment filed Thursday in the U.S. District Court for the NMI, Funkugub was caught in possession of a Smith and Wesson .38-caliber revolver on Oct. 11, 2011. The revolver’s serial number had been removed, altered, or obliterated-a violation of U.S. Code, according to the indictment filed by assistant U.S. attorney Garth R. Backe.
That same day, Funkugub also allegedly had with him six Winchester Super-X .22 caliber bullets.
The schedule of Funkugub’s initial court appearance was not immediately known yesterday.
The suspect has a prior conviction in September 2000 for cattle killing, a crime punishable by imprisonment exceeding one year.
In October 2011, the Office of the Attorney General charged the 35-year-old Funkugub with assault and battery, unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and disturbing the peace, over the alleged assault of a relative and firing of a handgun.
According to court records, police officers responded to As Teo after receiving a call about someone shooting a gun.
