Ex-convict gets prison term for punching man

An ex-convict who repeatedly punched a man at a store on Saipan last Oct. 25 was slapped with a one-year prison term.

Peterson Joseph Keju, 25, pleaded guilty to assault and battery last week. He also admitted violating his probation.

Keju was sentenced to seven months in prison for assault and battery, and five months of his suspended prison sentence for violating the terms and conditions of his probation.

He was given credit for time served from Nov. 16, 2016.

After completing this prison term, Keju will be placed on supervised probation for three years. He was ordered to pay the victim, Juan Cepeda, $1,148 in restitution for medical bills.

Keju is prohibited from any contact with the victims, Cepeda, Yao Wei Ma, and the L&Q Market.

He is not allowed to possess of consume any alcoholic beverages during his probation. He was required to complete alcohol counseling.

Last Nov. 9, the Office of the Attorney General charged Keju with two counts of assault and battery, two counts of disturbing the peace, and one count of criminal mischief.

While intoxicated, Keju allegedly assaulted Cepeda and Ma at L&Q Market, punchng Cepeda in the face several times.

On Oct. 6, 2015, Keju pleaded guilty to assault and battery. In that case, while intoxicated he punched a man in Garapan on Sept. 2, 2015. He also kicked three parked vehicles. Aside from the prison term, he was placed on probation for a year.
