An ex-convict was slapped with an 18-month prison sentence for repeatedly punching a man, causing the victim to lose consciousness and sustain severe injuries.

Nelson Anson Saimon, 26, pleaded guilty on Tuesday to aggravated assault and battery as part of a plea deal with the government. All other charges filed against Saimon in two separate criminal cases were dropped as part of the deal.

Superior Court Associate Judge Kenneth L. Govendo sentenced Saimon to five years in prison, all suspended except for 18 months, to be served without the possibility of parole, early release, or work release.

Saimon was directed to report to the Department of Corrections on Monday, July 7, at 8am to start serving his sentence. He will be released on Jan. 7, 2016.

After completing his sentence, Saimon will be placed on supervised probation for five years. He was required to pay $1,129.48 in restitution to the victim, $500 fine, $60 in court costs, and $250 in probation fees.

Saimon was also ordered to perform 150 hours of community service, report to the Community Guidance Center to undergo anger management counseling, and submit to an evaluation for alcohol and drug assessment and treatment.

During his probation, Saimon is barred from possessing or consuming any alcoholic beverages or illegal drugs.

Saimon repeatedly punched Sanderson Sebuu in the head and face on Nov. 21, 2013 on Saipan. When Sebuu lost consciousness, the defendant continued punching him in the face and head. As a result, the victim suffered severe injuries to the face, including a split tongue, a swollen and black and blue eye, and swollen lips and face.

Attorney Catherine Cachero served as counsel for Saimon.

In November 2011, Superior Court Associate Judge David A. Wiseman slapped Saimon with 30 days in prison for beating Aurelio Rayong in the face several times in Garapan on Aug. 11, 2011.
