Evaluation for Manila’s condition expected this week
PH consul visits other Filipinos in prison
A representative from the Philippine Consulate in Agana, Guam said an evaluation for prisoner Reynaldo A. Manila’s medical condition after undergoing a medical procedure in Guam is expected to be done this week.
Consul Gary Auxilian said that Manila is now recovering in Guam after the operation.
“I understand he had an eye operation already and I think there will be an evaluation by the doctor who is attending him,” Auxilian said.
Manila was allowed to go to Guam last Jan. 29 after the administration made the necessary arrangements for him to seek medical treatment in Guam as required under the CNMI Constitution.
The treatment, which was needed to prevent permanent blindness, was said to have taken place on Jan. 31. He is to stay at the Guam Adult Correctional Facility for recovery.
Auxilian added that Manila wanted to come back to Saipan after the medical procedure.
“When is he coming back? We don’t know,” Auxilian said.
While on Saipan last Tuesday, Auxilian visited four Filipinos who are currently imprisoned.
“We extended help, even just through our short visit, to give them some inspiration and assistance. We gave them some financial help for them to call their families and also for their personal needs,” Auxilian said.
The financial help was provided by the Philippine government and was supposed to have been given last Christmas.
“That’s normal that we assist our kababayans in jail,” Auxilian said, “Although it’s not part of the regular budget that every time we visit, we give them something.”
“They were so thankful with our visit and the little help that we were able to extend our help,” he added.
Auxilian also added that they are currently working on helping the repatriation of a 66-year-old Filipino on Saipan who recently suffered a stroke.
He said the Filipino doesn’t have any family on Saipan and relies on friends for help.
“We’re trying our best in Guam and we have communicated already with our office in Manila. We’re just waiting for the approval when and how he can go home. As soon as we get the approval, we will work on the arrangement,” Auxilian said.
