TOFOL, Kosrae—Training to help improve the response to natural disasters is under way in the Kosrae state this week, with a focus on strengthening the management of its emergency operations center (EOC) and helping the state respond better to disasters such as strong winds and storm surges which frequently impact the coastlines.

The EOC training, supported by the European Union funded Building Safety and Resilience in the Pacific Project, and implemented by the Pacific Community (SPC), is a capacity building initiative to improve the response to natural disasters.

Kosrae State Disaster Coordinating Officer and Chief of Staff in the Governor’s Office, Nena Williams stated that the training is timely as the EOC is being activated more often in response to increasingly frequent strong winds and storm surges events affecting the island.

Participants are from the Kosrae State Government Departments, Kosrae based FSM national companies such as the Petroleum Corporation as well two from Nauru and two from Palau.

The training will be facilitated by regional trainers, Dr. Kirstie Méheux of SPC and Jowana Koroituinakelo of the Government of Fiji.

Following the training SPC will provide support to Kosrae State Government to develop Standard Operating Procedures for the EOC which will complement the training and provide a foundation for response to future emergencies.

The training will conclude on Friday, March 11, with a simulation exercise. The training is being held at the Governor’s training room. (SPC)
