Ethnic groups are sought for Int’l Festival of Cultures

The Marianas Visitors Authority is inviting all ethnic groups to participate in the International Festival of Cultures slated this September. Ethnic group representatives are urged to contact the MVA before July 31, 2014, to sign up.

“We’ve had several organizational meetings already and are excited about what the festival is going to offer our visitors, a chance to experience the entertainment, crafts, and cuisine of our many cultures in the Northern Marianas,” said MVA acting managing director Martin Duenas. “In particular, we are seeking participants from the island cultures of Micronesia to join our organizing committee.”

Duenas clarified that participating groups would not be required to engage in all activities—performance, crafts, and food sales—every week if their resources are limited, but should plan to have at least one type of activity every week. The festival will be held every Saturday evening at Paseo de Marianas on Saipan and will celebrate the cultural diversity of the Northern Mariana Islands, with special emphasis on the indigenous cultures of Micronesia.

Representative groups may contact MVA Community Projects specialist Ryan Calvo at rcalvo@mymarianas.com or 664-3210 for more information. The last day to sign up to participate is July 31, 2014, by 5pm.

The festival will include food sales beginning at 5pm and live cultural entertainment from 6pm to 11pm. Admission is free. (MVA)
