Are you a high school student who loves to write?

The Saipan College Prep Academy is holding its “1st Annual SCPA Essay Contest” for high school students on the island.

The contest is a double competition, with one open only to SCPA students, and the other being open to all high school students in the CNMI.

Students need to write a 650-word essay on the topic, “Is Greta Thunberg right?” and submit it to Keith Tessen or Wanja Choi at the SCPA on or before Dec. 15 for SCPA students, and Dec. 30 for the rest.

Thunberg is a 16-year-old climate change activist. In the essay, the students need to write whether or not they agree with Thunberg, and justify their position.

“My students are teenagers and I wanted to inspire them,” Tessen said.

“Greta Thunberg is a teenager, and this girl is out there changing the world. I am hoping that [the students] will begin to understand that even though [they are] very young, [they] can do something to change things.”

Tessen, who runs SPCA, said that hosting the essay competition is a good way to emphasize the academy’s main focus, which is improving the reading and writing skills of students.

Winners in both contests will each take home $500, second placers $250, and third placers $125.
