Espinosa wins U20 MVP trophy
Armatech’s Mike Espinosa led the individual awardees in the U20 division of 2015 United Filipino Organization Basketball League after getting the MVP trophy last Saturday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.
Espinosa earned the coveted award for his notable showing in the regular season and consistent performance in the playoffs. The 6’0” Armatech player, who has a good shooting touch from the 3-point area, averaged nearly 17 points (16.7) in the round-robin regular season, scoring in twin digits in all but one of their four games.
The Marianas High School standout registered 24 points in their 72-51 victory over Blue Haus, had 20 in their 85-73 win against Gilas, and logged 16 in their 83-96 defeat at the hands of the Ol’Aces. The only time Espinosa failed to break into double figures (7 points) was in their 69-74 loss to regular season champion Sonics.
In the playoffs, Espinosa fired 20 markers to lift Armatech to a finals berth-clinching win over Blue Haus, 86-71. In the finals, he gained 13 points, 11 of them came in the fourth quarter as Armatech broke the Ol’Aces to steal the championship. His triple from the right key capped a pivotal 11-2 run and secured the win for Armatech as they led, 75-61, 2:12 to go in the final canto. Espinosa and Armatech went on to notch a double-digit winning margin in the finals, 78-66.
Meanwhile, Espinosa also made it to the Mythical Team, joining fellow Armatech player Kobee Mendoza, Sonics’ Jack Aranda, the Ol’Aces’ Jesse Santos, and Gilas’ Patrick Salalila.
