Soon after the new school year started, the Eskuelan San Francisco De Borja administration, faculty and staff, and the board of directors immediately spring into action to help their neighboring island of Saipan that had just been devastated by Typhoon Soudelor.

ESFDB students and parents solicited pledges for their 2K Health Walk-a-Thon fundraiser, which was held on Sept. 19, 2015. Proceeds were donated to Karidat.

Accepting the donation on behalf of Karidat was Rev. Fr. James Balajadia.

The students, joined by their teachers, parents, and supporters, walked from the Tatachong Pavilion to the school campus.

“The fundraiser is for a worthy cause [while] at the same time we are encouraging health and fitness,” said administrator/principal Carmen H. Atalig. “We’re committed to helping out, and this event helps us commit to helping the CNMI community. We’re really excited.”

“Generous donors helped make the walk-a-thon a success. We exceeded our goal and we are grateful to these donors for their kind heart,” added Atalig.

Angelo Lucero, 8th grade student and student body president, said he immediately thought about the victims after seeing photos of the devastation caused by Typhoon Soudelor. “I’m just thinking like how it just feels so good that we’re doing this for a good cause.”

“They [Saipan community] were there for us in our time of need. Now it’s our turn for our faithful Luta community to give back to our brothers and sisters of the Saipan community,” said board chair Edward Maratita Jr. “In addition, students, parents, and teachers had fun walking, which emphasized the importance of a healthy, active lifestyle.”

Also, Eskuelan San Francisco de Borja had been designated to accept donations on behalf of Karidat. Anyone interested in making a donation may stop by the business office and drop off your donation.

The administration, faculty and staff, students, and board of directors would like to express their appreciation to the parents, pledge donors, Rev. Fr. Balajadia, Department of Public Safety-Police and Fire/EMS Division, and Jeremy and Imelda Atalig. (ESFDB)
