Entries sought for Saipan fan fiction contest
The Joeten-Kiyu Public Library invites public and private middle schools and high schools on Saipan, Tinian, and Rota to participate in the 2nd Annual Saipan Dreams Fan Fiction Contest.
The grand prize is $100, while the first runner-up will get $75 and the second runner-up will get $50. The first 10 official entries will receive a $10 gift certificate to Regal Cinema on Saipan, courtesy of Frances Kilili Arriola.
Gift certificates will be issued on Thursday, Dec. 7, at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library during the final judging ceremony.
There are two phases of the contest. In the first phase, the official start was Nov. 1, 2017 and will close on Friday, Dec. 1, at 6pm. Competition is open to ages 13 to 18 years old. Each public and private school is asked to participate and submit an entry into the competition. All entries must be submitted to saipandreamsfanfiction@gmail.com
Participants are invited to submit original works of fan fiction of any form. Submission must be between 1,000 to 2,500 words.
Submissions must be typewritten using Times New Roman font (or other easily readable font) in size 12 or larger. The participant’s name, grade level, school affiliation, and contact numbers should appear on the top right corner of the page.
Entries will be initially reviewed and scored by a panel of judges who will examine form and content with a particular focus on most detailed, best written overall, most imaginative, best plot line, and most interesting.
The Top 5 CNMI entries will then recite their work during the second phase at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library VTC room at 4pm on Dec. 7, 2017. If a participant from Tinian or Rota is in the Top 5, participant will be asked to recite his/her work at the Tinian Public Library and Rota participant in the Antonio C. Atalig Memorial Public Library at 4pm on Dec. 7, 2017.
During the second phase, the Top 5 participants will be scored by a second panel of judges. All participants will receive certificates of participation.
The grand prize winner will have his/her name and school name inscribed on a perpetual trophy that will be housed at the Joeten-Kiyu Public Library until next year’s competition. He/she will receive $100, plus the opportunity to work with author Katrina Manning to create a character in her fifth book. The winner’s work will have a chance to be promoted during Manning’s 2018 U.S. book signings and will appear in an interview on the Humanities Half-Hour.
The first runner up will receive $75 and a one-hour virtual career guidance session with Manning. The first runner-up will also appear in an interview on the Humanities Half-Hour.
The second runner up will get $50.
