Edralin, Galvez win opening games in Sun Palace tourney

Deether Edralin and Andreau Galvez prevailed in the pair of opening matches in the 2016 Sun Palace Badminton Team Tournament last Friday at the TSL Sports Complex.

Edralin was pitted against Jordan Pangilinan in the men’s A single event and needed three games to win his first assignment, 21-10, 20-22, 22-4. Galvez also played an extended match, losing the opening game to Daniel Macario, 14-21, before sweeping the last two, 21-9, 21-10.

Eight other matches were scheduled at the kick-off day of the Sun Palace Hotel-sponsored and Northern Marianas Badminton Association-sanctioned tournament.

One of them is the men’s AB doubles tiff where Pangilinan, with Nathan Guerrero, this time defeating Edralin and Jeff Riman, 21-18, 13-21, 21-18. In the other game in the same division, Macario partnered with Rodwealth Espana and they won over Galvez and Mhar Dela Cruz, 21-14, 21-19.

Guerrero had his second game in the opening day when he partnered with Hajin Oh in slipping past Riman and Jun Kim, 21-16, 17-21, 21-11, in the men’s BC doubles, while Espana also went 2-0 on Day 1 as he and Taeho Kim topped Patrick Fernandez and A.J. Ortega, 21-13, 23-21.

In the women’s C singles, Allysa Velasco rallied past Helly Montes, 18-21, 21-14, 21-12, while Miles Rodriguez swept Yoko, 21-9, 21-6. Velasco also saw action in the mixed BC doubles, but she and Chris Hilario lost to Jaja Bocago and Jun Kim, 16-21, 17-21. In the other mixed BC double game, Vilma Reyes and Dela Cruz outclassed Espana and Merlie Savellano, 19-21, 21-16, 21-16.

Meanwhile, action in the Sun Palace tournament continued last Saturday and Sunday and 20 matches were completed with results of each game counted in the standings of the five participating squads—Blue, Red, Black, White, and Pink.
