Easy wins for DYS, SIP

  DYS/Bayani and Samahang Ilokano at Pangesinense/Barney’s had a walk in the park in the U20 division make-up matches in the 2012 UFO Docomo Pacific Cup last Tuesday at the Gilbert C. Ada Gymnasium.

DYS/Bayani pounded the hapless AON/Boholano in the second game, 100-33, while SIP/Barney’s whipped DeMolay in the curtain raiser, 72-58. DYS/Bayani now has a 4-0 record, one win away from sweeping the round-robin regular season, while AON/Boholano finished with a 1-4 mark. SIP/Barney’s notched its second straight victory for an even 2-2 card, while DeMolay fell to a 0-4 slate.

The win over AON was the most lopsided in the league this season and DYS/Bayani did it after limiting the former to two points in the second quarter. DYS/Bayani had a manageable lead at the end of the first period, 24-11, but opened a huge 46-13 halftime advantage when only Lemiet Hemley scored for AON in the second canto.

DYS/Bayani’s much deeper bench was too much for the young crew of AON, composed of players who suited up for the CNMI Team B in last month’s Micronesian Basketball U17 Tournament. DYS/Bayani, on the other hand, is bannered by members of CNMI Team A.

Nevin Salem led the one-sided victory with his 16 points, while seven others added at least 6 points each. Only Johnjohn Capuyon tallied double figures for AON with 12.

In the first game, SIP/Barney’s also pulled away in the second quarter after holding DeMolay to 7 points.

The match was tied after the first 10 minutes, 11-all. John Darag carried most of the load for SIP/Barney’s, scoring 9 of their total points, while four players made it to the scoreboard for DeMolay to keep their team in the game.

However, things started to fall apart for DeMolay in the second canto when only Dae Min Jeon drilled more than 2 points for the team. Darag also struggled in the second period, nailing only one field goal, but Erick Dela Rosa was there to fill the gap, making seven of his 13 markers in that quarter. Five other SIP players also contributed at least two points each to put their team in the driver’s seat at the break, 30-18.

SIP/Barney’s never looked back, as Darag became active on offense again in the second half and drew support from Albert Salas, who was scoreless in the first three quarters, but dropped all his 9 markers in the final frame.
