Online teachers across the Commonwealth gathered at the Saipan Southern High School campus over the weekend to map out ways to improve online learning for students in the Northern Marianas.
The Instructional Tech & Distance Ed Program hosted its Continuous Improvement Workshop, held after every semester, last Saturday to review student evaluation data, share best practices, and learn new tech tools—all with the goal of sharpening online learning as the Public School System enters the spring 2020 term.
Dr. Bobby Cruz and Lorraine Catienza, Instructional Technology & Distance Education Program leaders, led the workshop.
According to Cruz, the program is always excited to meet with e-teachers because they’re the backbone of the success of the program.
“It’s important to gather and reflect on our practices, especially those that are instructional, and set goals that will help our students more effectively learn online,” he said.
Catienza explained that the workshop is for online teachers to come together at the end of each term to reflect on areas of strength and discuss rooms for improvement.
“We are able to refine courses each term to offer high quality instruction to all of our online learners,” she said.
Education Commissioner Dr. Alfred Ada, who was also at the workshop, reminded the online teaching team of the importance of their role. “The work you all do is so important, and I want to thank you all for your commitment to our students who take online courses,” he said.
The Instructional Technology & Distance Education Program is among one of the largest programs in the CNMI Public School System, with multiple branches that support technology-based learning supports and initiatives for students.
Its goal is to provide access to quality online educational experiences to support digital learners across the CNMI.
The program’s Student Portal Branch provides high school online learning opportunities for private and public schools students throughout the Marianas, serving nearly 2000 students annually.
