For the first time in its long and storied history, the Ye Olde Saipanne Golfe Clubbe has a two-time champion.
Don “Champ” Dunlop bested eight other YOSGC members in last Saturday’s tournament on the west course of the Laolay Bay Golf & Resort to become the club’s 2020 Golfer of the Year, a title he also took during the inaugural championship in 2014.
Dunlop’s gross score of 90 translated to a net 71, giving him a two-stroke victory over 2016 champion Michael Deary (gross 94/net 73) and rookie Glenn Bell (gross 92/net 73). Alone in fourth place was Juan Lizama, who finished three strokes off the lead with a gross score of 88 for a net 74. Rounding out the field were Richard Miller, Grant Balmer, Timothy Brasuell, and Wilhelm Maui.
When asked about his historic victory, Dunlop said “You know, it seems like at least five competitors played better than me. We’re all champions the way I see it.”
After the competition, the club held its post-tournament banquet with Dunlop presented with the YOSGC Champion’s Jugge and Ugly Yellow Jacket by 2019 co-champions Lizama and Dan Harding. (PR)
