DRT launches online portal for Advance Child Tax Credit Payments
The Department of Finance, Division of Revenue and Taxation would like to notify the public that the CNMI Advance Child Tax Credit Update Portal will launch at 12am (midnight) ChST on Aug. 27, 2021.
How it works
For tax year 2021, the Child Tax Credit is increased from $2,000 per qualifying child to $3,000 per child for dependents ages 6 through 17, and $3,600 for dependents ages 5 and under.
The Advance Child Tax payments are based on the number of qualifying children on your 2020 return, or your 2019 return if you have not filed yet. Therefore, if your AdvCTC payments exceed your 2021 child tax credit when you file in 2022, you may have to pay back the excess amount.
Advance CTC payments will begin August through December 2021.
Enrolling and receiving advance CTC payments
You can visit our portal to provide required information at https://ctcup.dof.gov.mp. You will need to use your name, Social Security number, and your adjusted gross income from your most recent tax return to log in.
To receive AdvCTC payments, you must provide the qualifying child’s date of birth.
If taxpayers are unable to use the portal, they may use Form AdvCTC, available on the DOF website at https://www.dof.gov.mp/forms.php and submit to DRT for processing.
Additionally, the portal will allow taxpayers to submit banking information for direct deposit payments.
If you don’t want to receive payments
If you do not wish to receive the Advance CTC payments because you would rather claim the full credit when you file your 2021 tax return or know you are not eligible, you can unenroll through our portal or submit Form AdvCTC to the Division of Revenue and Taxation.
Both individuals on a joint return must unenroll to avoid receiving their AdvCTC payment. The spouse who did not unenroll will receive their portion of the payments.
Qualifying child requirements
The qualifying child must be below 17 before Jan. 1, 2022, they must live with the taxpayer for more than half the tax year, and they must not have provided for more than half of their support and is a U.S. citizen.
