Pride Marianas Youth and PalmTrio 670 will be hosting a 5-kilometer run or walk event on June 26 along the Gov. Froilan C. Tenorio Beach Road Pathway starting from the Garapan Fishing Base to the Japanese World War II tank and back.
Drag Race Marianas will start promptly at 6am with the first 100 sign-ups getting an event medal. Registration is free with registration until race day, June 26.
PalmTrio 670 member Jefferson Mateo said they and Pride Marianas Youth organized Drag Race Marianas in celebration of Pride Month and for the benefit of the LGBTQ+.
“We are hosting this 5K to celebrate our rainbow family! We are co-leading the event alongside the amazing people under Pride Marianas Youth. We wanted to incorporate a family-friendly event that focuses on holistic-wellness, where anyone and everyone is welcome,” he said.
Mateo said they are expecting around 150 participants to take part in Drag Race Marianas, which they plan to make into a yearly thing during Pride Month.
And contrary to the event’s name, Drag Race Marianas is non-competitive and organizers will not be taking the times of the finishers.
“It’s called a drag race, not because it’s a race, but because we wanted our participants to come together and do their best to complete the 5K by walking, jogging, running, and/or sashaying the 5K route,” he said.
Mateo also said organizers wanted to call it a drag race to pay tribute to Rupaul’s Drag Race television show. “We find inspiration in the members of the show and thus we encourage the community to come to the event in drag and simply express themselves.
Aside from medals to the first 100 to register, participants will also get opportunities to win prizes under the Dressed in Drag category and Rainbow Runners category.
