The Department of Public Works has underscored the need to inspect for safety the Imperial Pacific International (CNMI) LLC’s casino/resort building in Garapan, which has been closed since the COVID1-9 pandemic happened. It remains closed up to now.

In this regard, DPW Secretary Ray N. Yumul asked Commonwealth Casino Commission commissioner Ralph Demapan last May 1 for authorization for the Building Safety Code inspectors to enter the IPI building to conduct an inspection.

Yumul, who used to serve as IPI chief executive officer, said the inspection is necessary to assess the existing condition of the electrical, mechanical, and standard components of the equipment.

He said the inspection is needed to also verify the integrity of the building and its welding connections.

Yumul said DPW will also conduct a visual inspection of Tower Cranes No. 1 and 5 at the building.

Yumul said the last inspection IPI conducted on the site was in May 2021, which found rusting components of tower structures and safety rails that will eventually weaken the structural integrity of the tower crane.

Yumul said the safety inspection is significant to identify the critical areas that may need immediate attention to prevent serious disasters from occurring and to protect life and property.
