DPW extends anew Marpi landfill emergency contract

Department of Public Works Secretary Martin Sablan confirmed Tuesday that the six-month emergency contract awarded to Tangs Corp. to operate the Marpi landfill has been extended for three months in the amount of some $186,000.

Sablan said the extension will give DPW time to issue a request for proposal, receive bids, and award a three-year contract for the landfill’s operation.

“An RFP is being finalized. If a long-term contract is awarded earlier than expected, we could terminate the three-month extension contract because that’s one of the conditions,” the DPW secretary told Saipan Tribune.

DPW awarded Tangs Corp. with a six-month emergency contract in December 2013 to operate the Marpi landfill for some $372,000. DPW recently approved a three-month extension of that contract, cutting the original price to half.

For more than 20 months now, DPW has been entering into equipment rental agreement with contractors for trash compacting, among other things, at the landfill, mainly because of procurement protests and appeals.
