DPW condemns Saipan Animal Shelter

Shelter to close at end of the month

The Department of Public Works-Building Safety Code Division has determined the Office of the Mayor of Saipan Lower Base Animal Shelter is structurally unsafe for use because of damage from Typhoon Soudelor and has ordered the Office of the Mayor of Saipan to vacate it by no later than March 30, 2016.

The Mayor’s Office is complying with the order and has begun the process of physically vacating the shelter by removing its employees and personal property from the shelter and all dogs and cats currently in impoundment.

The Office of the Mayor of Saipan has no temporary shelter where the impounded dogs and cats may be placed and cared for. Because of this reason, Mayor David M. Apatang is offering families and individuals to visit the shelter and pick out any health dog or cat and become a proud pet owner! Come visit the shelter from 7:30am to 4:30pm Monday through Sunday. Give a cat or dog a chance to become your best friend by paying only the yearly license fee of $6 for dogs that have been spayed or neutered, or $10 if not. Since cats do not need to be registered, you can take home a cat for no charge!

“The shelter is officially in crisis mode as we have only a short time frame to find all of these animals good homes,” said Spencer Marchadesch, Dog Control Program manager for the Saipan Mayor’s Office. “We have terrific animals available for adoption, and if you are thinking of adopting any time in the near future, now is the time to do so because the shelter will not be open for the next several months as repairs take place.”

“Unfortunately any animals left over at the end of the month may end up being euthanized, so we are hoping to find as many animals as possible good homes so we don’t have to resort to this drastic measure” said Jason Hudy, president of Saipan Cares for Animals.

Visit the Animal Shelter in Lower Base or call the Office of the Mayor of Saipan at 234-6208, or contact Marchadesch at 783-4743.
