DPS implements Designated Driver Program

In anticipation of the various celebrations welcoming the New Year, the Department of Public Safety is implementing the “Designated Driver Program” starting Dec. 29, 2017, to Jan. 1, 2018, where you can be picked up by a DPS designated driver for free.

The aim of the program is to encourage each individual to not to go behind the wheel after a night of drinking.

The Designated Driver Program hotlines are 287-7433 and 483-7433. You can call for a free ride on Dec. 29 and Dec. 31 from 10pm to 5am. The program is also available on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 from 10pm to 2am.

No major accidents or incidents were reported during the CNMI Christmas weekend, when residents have died in situations caused by impaired drivers in years past.

Keeping the public safe is the sole priority of DPS. First, always drink responsibly and assign a designated driver. Second, the words “I am just tipsy and not drunk” is not an excuse. Tipsy driving is drunk driving. Third and the most effective prevention is not to drink and drive.

DPS hopes the safe holidays would extend through the New Year weekend.
